About Us

Mike with kidsMy name is Mike Teusink. I graduated from Calvin College in 1999 with a B.A. in history and certification to teach impressionable students in grades 7-12. I taught history to middle school students in Lafayette, Indiana, for four years while my wife attended graduate school at Purdue University. During my summers as a teacher I began to build boats out of wood. I could never have imagined how this seemingly simple decision at the time would affect my life. What started with a simple kayak built in the living room has now blossomed into a professional boatshop, The Wooden Runabout Co. LLC.

Kirk in Chris-Craft 19' barrelback

My business partner and friend in this endeavor is Kirk Wingard. Kirk graduated from Michigan State University in 1985. Since that time he has done more in the field of wooden boat restoration than I can list here. He worked at Grand-Craft while he was still in high school, learning the craft of wooden boat construction and restoration from retired Chris-Craft employees. After college he spent some time as a carpenter and loftsman with Broward Yachts in Saugatuck, MI. For the last twenty years Kirk has been the senior carpenter and foreman at Macatawa Bay Boat Works. Kirk has taken his experience of the past and applied it to the future with the launch of The Wooden Runabout Co. LLC.
